Scandi Garage Punk Love Affair : PowerSolo

December 27, 2011 - 11:36 am No Comments

Two Scandi gems courtesy of Danish mentalists PowerSolo, signed to Copenhagen label Crunchy Frog. Lo-fi, shouty, with tons of strut and squirm-inducing videos.  Of course I’m going to love this.

Midnight Monsters Hop – Halloween Horror Mix

October 31, 2011 - 12:09 am No Comments

I’d happily listen to trashy horror tunes any time of year, but this seemed like a particularly good time to stick my favourites into a little mix.  I hope Lux would dig it, bless his little soul.

Stream from the Mixcloud player below, or download it as an MP3 from soundcloud. Plus, as a bonus, a little scary surf instrumental MP3.

Happy Halloween!

BONEYARDS

August 10, 2011 - 2:03 pm No Comments

A band that writes snotty ear-bashing tunes about beatboxing is a band worth knowing about, and loving.

Boneyards (or is it BONEYARDS?) are from somewhere south – London or Brighton, I’m not sure – and will likely tickle you if you like Mazes, Thee Fair-Ohs, Flats or going back a bit further, The Mummies and bits of Bad Brains.  Which, being a fairly simple soul musically, I do.

Their cassette is available from what is another in a long line of brilliantly-named, t-shirt-worthy labels, Italian Beach Babes.  Said label is also responsible for the brilliant Wet Dog, who put out their record long pre-this blog, which has just reminded me that I should post something about them.

ANYWAY, they – BONEYARDS, that is – are supporting Novella at the Shacklewell Arms on Friday, which handily (for me, anyway) is on the 488 bus route, AND, ladies and gentlemen, it’s a mere THREE of your British pounds to get in.

Human Nature by BONEYARDS

One thing – wtf is with the cassettes?  They’re retro, but as a musical delivery medium, they are also shit.  Everyone knows wax cylinder is where it’s at.

Jacuzzi Boys pretty much rule.

Do you like the Cramps, Richard Hell and crocodile wrestling? Me too!

Have I got a band for you. Avail yourself of The Jacuzzi Boys and their Floridian fuzzy garage goodness.

They have a new album, Glazin’, heading our way over the bank holiday.  If it’s anything like their Bricks or Coconuts EP (two more items for the desert island bag), then we are in for a treat.

Two Tears – Heisse Hexe

June 16, 2011 - 11:21 am 2 Comments

Translation from German: “Hot Witch”.  HELL, YES.

Two Tears is guitarist Kerry Davis (late of 90s-LA punk band Red Aunt) and whichever drummer she happens to have on tour with her at the moment.  I first encountered her supporting Dan Sartain at a couple of shows over Easter this year, and have been meaning to post about her for ages.

This track was one of the standouts of a stellar shouty set, and is the b-side of the “Eat People” 7″ EP, which was released in the US in March. As far as I know, it’s pretty much only available on these shores digitally, unless you happen to buy one from Kerry at one of her shows.  Or check your local independent record shop – it may not be there much longer!

Two Tears.  Two words: utterly perfect.
